Cotignac

- History and heritage:

Cotignac stands out from the other villages of Provence by its "rock" entirely created of stalactites and deep cavities shaped by the highly mineralized water of the Cassoles.
First settled in the Troglos, small dwellings above the rock dominating the valley, the Cotignaceans finally settled down at the foot of the cliff which protects them throughout the year from its height of 80 meters. One can easily recognize its houses by their facades with stone ornaments and ironwork.
Notre Dame de Grâce, built in 1519 at the request of Mary under the name “I am the Virgin Mary. Go tell the clergy and the Consuls of Cotignac to build me a church, under the name of Notre Dame de Grâce and that we come in procession to receive the gifts that I want to spread there ".
Since then, with its dominant view over the plain and the surrounding hills which leads you to the Saint Joseph Monastery, the place has become a place of procession and pilgrimage.
In the 12th century, 2 towers, called "Saracens" were built to watch over the plain and protect the seigneury of Cotignac.
As the population grew, the construction of a church was undertaken; the Saint Pierre church with its atypical facade offers you its majestic organ.
