Le Val

- History and heritage:

Separated from Brignoles by dolmens on the crest, Le Var was built little by little at the foot of the cliffs with the construction of an oppidum on the hill of Paracol which will be, until the 10th century, the refuge of the inhabitants during the invasions .
The family of Châteaurenard recovers Le Val as well as Paracol and Correns, following the distribution of the land carried out by the count Guillaume 1st, nicknamed “The Liberator”, thus freeing Provence from the Saracens, and it is in 979 that Mathilde of Châteaurenard donated all his land to the Abbey of Montmajour.
At this time, the church, built by Mathilde's daughter, then becomes the place where the inhabitants will build ramparts, of which the 2 main gates remain: the clock tower and the tithe gate. Once the ramparts are built, the mills, fountains, washhouses and tanneries appear.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Le Val developed strongly economically. Indeed, various activities, such as tanneries, sericulture, agriculture, olive growing, viticulture or even breeding and exploitation of Bauxite help the development of the village with the wine activity which is still very present nowadays.
At the end of the First World War, 43 Valois perished in the field of honor and a dozen in the Second World War.
