Discover the Haut Var : between nature and authenticity
The Haut Var, with its spectacular, unspoilt landscapes, is a veritable treasure trove of Provence. At the heart of this region are the majestic Gorges du Verdon, Europe's largest canyon, where the emerald waters of the river have carved limestone cliffs up to 700 meters deep. Green plateaus, lavender fields, waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes such as Lac de Sainte-Croix and Lac d'Esparron de Verdon provide an idyllic setting for a multitude of outdoor activities, including canyoning, rafting, kayaking, climbing, paragliding and hiking.
The picturesque villages that dot the region add to the Haut Var's incomparable charm. Places like Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon, Bauduen, Aiguines and Les Salles-sur-Verdon offer an authentic, unspoilt atmosphere, where time seems to stand still. Near the Gorges du Verdon, perched villages such as Tourtour, nicknamed "the village in the sky", Villecroze with its troglodytic caves, Flayosc and Aups, and Sillans-la-Cascade with its superb 42-meter waterfall, invite you to discover the region's rich history and culture. In the Haut Var, you'll also find Salernes, famous for its terracotta, Barjols and its fountain circuit, Tavernes, an ancient fortified village, and Varages and its famous earthenware.
As you travel along the route des crêtes, you'll be dazzled by breathtaking panoramas, particularly from the "Point sublime" on the left bank, the Cavaliers cliff, the Artuby bridge and the Mescla balconies. Each village tells its own story through medieval alleyways, fountains and shady squares, offering a real journey back in time through Provencal traditions.
